About the Homecard | Participating Libraries | FAQs

Huntington Public Library is a Homecard library. This is a cooperative program that currently includes 30 libraries in northwestern Vermont. When you register for a Homecard, you can visit any member library for access to their collections, programs, and services.

Before borrowing from other libraries, you must bring your card to HPL to update your account and sign the Homecard Agreement. Patrons with HomeCard privileges must be in good standing to borrow from other libraries and present an active library card with a stamp signifying that they are in the HomeCard program. All materials borrowed from other libraries must be returned to that lending library.

Participating libraries are listed below. Please contact individual libraries for information on hours and their policies for Homecard use.

Homecard FAQs

What is a Homecard?
The Homecard Library System is a cooperative lending program of 30 libraries in northwestern Vermont. Patrons who sign up for Homecard can check out materials at any Homecard library in Vermont for free.

How do I get a Homecard?
Come to the HPL and ask to sign up for Homecard. Our staff will give you a Homecard agreement to sign, and a Homecard sticker for your HPL card, making it useable at other Homecard libraries.

Can I return items I check out at another library to HPL?
No, items must be returned to the library where they were checked out. If you return an item to the wrong library, your HPL account will reflect the overdue items, which could lead to restrictions being placed on your account.

Will my HPL card work at other libraries?
Once you have a Homecard sticker, your HPL card will work at Homecard libraries that use the same online catalog system as HPL (Koha). If a Homecard library doesn’t use Koha, you will be issued a special Homecard from that Library free of charge.

Will items I check out at another library show up on my HPL Account?
If the library uses the Koha system, you will see items checked out from other libraries. If they don’t, you will not.

Can I check out Non-Traditional items or use digital resources from another Homecard library?
Each library in the system sets its own limits for what Homecard users can access. Usually, you will not have access to digital resources, and limited access to new or special collections.

How do I see what’s available at other libraries?
You can search most Homecard libraries’ catalogs on their library websites to see what they have in their collection. You can also visit libraries in person and browse, or call the library.

Can I place a hold at another Homecard library?
Yes, but not with your online account. You may place a hold on an item at another Homecard library by calling them and asking to place a Homecard hold.

Can I renew items from another library online with my HPL account?
If the library also uses Koha the item will show up on your HPL account and can be renewed online. If you do not see the item in your online account, contact the library you borrowed that item from for renewals.

Will items I check out at another library count toward my item total at HPL?
The lending library’s rules apply to each borrowed item. Note that policies like borrowing time and item limits may be different at other libraries.
